The french Prime Minister announced Thursday, August 29, 2019 the names of the 24 winners of the second wave of calls for projects of University Research Schools among the 81 submitted applications. The University of Toulouse Midi Pyrenees is particularly well positioned with 5 EUR selected by the international jury chaired by Sir Malcolm Grant, former president of University College London.

This second wave aims to "strongly link training and research by bringing together in the same dynamic of excellence universities, schools and other academic organizations" and "promote the scientific highlights of institutions and sites throughout the world".

Extending the TULIP LabEx’s pedagogical facet within TULIP-GSR towards 2030

The TULIP-GSR project constitutes the natural extension of the already budding educational facet of the TULIP ambition. It aims to train students in methods and concepts needed to study the biotic interactions from the molecular, to the cell, organism, population, community and ecosystem levels, within the 7 TULIP labs located in Toulouse (EDB, GBF, LIPM, LRSV, SETE) and Perpignan (LGDP, IHPE). This project has three major objectives: train students (i) using problem-based learning methods, (ii) on interdisciplinary projects, and (iii) attract talented students at the international level. For this purpose, we will adopt an innovative pedagogy based on a full immersion within TULIP research laboratories. This will stimulate the freethinking potential of our students, as well as their capacity to include societal and economic considerations in the construction of their problem-solving strategies.

Both University teachers (UPS, INPT, UPVD) and researchers (CNRS, INRA, IRD) will contribute and closely collaborate to ensure the transmission of cutting-edge interdisciplinary research to talented and self-reliant students. The creation of a new two-year Master, fully in English, and open to national and international students will constitute the backbone of TULIP-GSR. This new and interdisciplinary Master will nicely complement contributing disciplinary Masters already running in Toulouse and Perpignan, which separately train students either in Ecology or in Functional Biology. It will not only bridge these contributing disciplinary Masters, but also concern the younger Licence students attracted by interdisciplinarity. In addition, many mobility opportunities at the international level will be available. The Doctorate is also at the heart of TULIP-GSR, through the co-funding of thesis fellowships, as well as PhD mobility and research packages. TULIP-GSR will also provide opportunities for TULIP scientists to increase their interdisciplinary competences by attending high-level training courses.

Finally, jointly with the TULIP Labex, TULIP-GSR will reinforce the structuring of research and teaching in the Occitanie Region in a major regional discipline priority, i.e. biotic interactions and adaptation of organisms to their natural environment, a domain that is in fact at the scientific heart of all the many human environmental challenges in the near future. In direct connection with the TULIP LabEx’s activities, TULIP-GSR will thus promote the attractiveness of Toulouse and Perpignan Universities towards the best students and the most renowned teachers and researchers. The governance of TULIP-GSR will be shared with that of the LabEx TULIP for maximum efficiency.
