Plant mobile domain proteins ensure Microrchidia 1 expression to fulfill transposon silencing

LGDP researchers published in February in Life Science Alliance, through this study revealed the subtle interplay between PMD and MORC1 pathways to efficiently repress TEs.

"The Plant Mobile Domain (PMD) proteins MAIN and MAIL1 interact together to regulate gene expression and repress transposable elements (TEs) in Arabidopsis. In a recent study published in Life Science Alliance, our group at LGDP showed that MAIN and MAIL1 are required for the proper expression of the chromatin factor Microrchidia 1 (MORC1), which is involved in TE silencing.

Through the study of pmd and morc1 high order mutants, we showed the combining the mutations does not exacerbate TE silencing defects, while rescuing MORC1 expression in the pmd mutants is sufficient to reestablish TE silencing at a subset of loci. Thus, this study reveals the subtle interplay between PMD and MORC1 pathways to efficiently repress TEs."
