A look back at the TULIP Summer School 2025

A look back at the 13th edition of the TULIP Summer School “Biological interactions from genes to ecosystems,” which took place from June 21 to 27 in Germ, in the French Pyrenees.

This year, good news ! There were no last-minute absences for the Summer School, which welcomed all 24 expected participants :
3 postdocs, 7 master's students, and 14 doctoral students from 12 different countries.

In just two months, the number of applications skyrocketed to nearly 1,500. Although some did not meet the expectations and criteria (or were even off-topic), each of the 1,478 applications was reviewed.
After an initial screening phase, we narrowed it down to the 200 most interesting profiles, then to 60 applications to be sent to supervisors and members of our advisory boards for evaluation.

6 students from 4 LabEx laboratories took part in the Summer School, and for the first time, students from the TULIP FBE Master's program were able to participate, thanks to a more favorable schedule.

Program

Although the overall structure of the program remains consistent with previous years, we have slightly adjusted the balance between seminars and workshops based on feedback from last year's students and supervisors.

We have also included a session on public speaking in the program, with a particular focus on research-specific scenarios (poster sessions, oral presentations with support materials, oral presentations without support materials, etc.).
This training session was proposed by Jean-François Vrod, based on his professional experience as a multidisciplinary artist and his collaborations with Ciryl Isnart.

Of course, we renewed the traditional team-building day with a hike in the Peyragudes mountains.

Supervisors

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the supervisors and people who assisted us in preparing for this event.

For the first time, all laboratories were represented in the team :
Alexandra Magro (CRBE), Nathalie Sejalon-Delmas (LRSV), Delphine Legrand (SETE), Erika Burioli (IHPE), Marie Mirouze (LGDP), Alexis Chaine (SETE), Carlos Zarate-Chaves (LIPME), Philipp Heeb (CRBE).

Thanks to Endrick Guy (Lallemand Plant Care), “TULIP career” guest.

And of course, thanks also to the international guests :
- Denis Reale (University of Quebec in Montreal)
- Chaitanya Gokhale (University of Würzburg) for preparing the event and grading the candidates despite a last-minute impediment.

Workshop

The workshops consist of six students and are led by two supervisors who propose a topic at the intersection of their disciplines. The group must develop a research project related to their topic and present it at the end of the week.

The place

Since last year and our arrival at the Germ Louron Mountain Center, the association that manages the site has also been providing a cultural program for the valley's residents. This year again, the association specifically tailored the themes of its program to align with our Summer School.

We were therefore fortunate enough to attend a performance by Ciryl Isnart (CNRS anthropologist) and Jean-François Vrod (actor, musician, composer, etc.) on the encounter between science and the arts, whom we had already had the opportunity to meet during the previous edition.

We would like to thank the entire team at the Mountain Center once again for their hospitality, organization, and attention to detail, which ensured that the Summer School experience was the best it could be !
