Autumn School in Ecology and Integrative Biology 2023

Largely supported by LabEx TULIP, the "Autumn School in Ecology and Integrative Biology", a joint UE for the M2 BPM (Biology of Plants and Associated Microorganisms) and M2 EcoEvo (Ecology and Evolution) was held at the end of September at the Centre de Montagne de Suc et Sentenac, in Ariège. These days of teaching and scientific reflection promote the blending and complementarity of the disciplines of evolutionary ecology and plant molecular sciences, two of the LabEx's major scientific themes.

It's an opportunity for the two communities of students, from different educational backgrounds, to exchange and share approaches, concepts and scientific themes that are specific, or sometimes overlapping. More than thirty short scientific presentations, on topics as varied as "the roles of peptides in endomycorrhizal symbiosis", "the characteristics of a pathogenic oomycete effector", "the identification of loci under selection in a river fish population", "the study of the activity and hunting zones of a bat on Réunion Island"... have enabled us to appreciate the diversity of the themes and to encourage dialogue and improve our communication skills, so as to be better understood by a non-specialist but enlightened public.

Other workshops focused on professional integration after a Master's degree, enabling students to ask questions and take a step back to reflect on their professional future. Later, under the guidance of philosopher of science Arnaud Pocheville (CNRS, EDB), students were also invited to reflect and debate on issues associated with scientific ethics, the history of science and epistemology.

Finally, informal discussions during breaks and meals shared by the two communities, or during a hike in the Pyrenean foothills close to the center, completed the mixing and integration of the two Master's classes, unanimously delighted by this moment of relaxation and reflection.
