IPCC Sixth Assessment Report assesses the impacts of climate change

Camille Parmesan, researcher at the Station of Theoretical and Experimental Ecology (SETE - UMR CNRS / UPS), is part of the Working Group II which has contributed to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report assesses the impacts of climate change, looking at ecosystems, biodiversity, and human communities at global and regional levels. It also reviews vulnerabilities and the capacities and limits of the natural world and human societies to adapt to climate change.

Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability’, the contribution to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report presents a comprehensive assessment of the current state of knowledge of the observed impacts and projected risks of climate change as well as the adaptation options.

The rapport is composed by 18 Chapters and 7 Cross-Chapter Papers of the Working Group II Report assess the impacts of climate change on nature and humanity, and their capacities and limits for adaptation.

Camille Parmesan is one of the two "co-ordinating lead authors" of chapter II of the report, contributing author of the Summary for Policymakers, the Technical Summary, and some 8 other parts of the report.

The report confirms the strong interactions of the natural, social and climate systems and that human-induced climate change has caused widespread adverse impacts to nature and people. It is clear that across sectors and regions, the most vulnerable people and systems are disproportionately affected and climate extremes have led to irreversible impacts. The assessment underscores the importance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C if we are to achieve a fair, equitable and sustainable world.
