Wild Helianthus species : Un réservoir de gènes de résistance pour une résistance pyramidale durable à l'orobanche chez le tournesol

Members of LIPME (UMR INRAE / CNRS) published an article in Frontiers in Plant Science in October 2022, a study that showed the strong potential of wild Helianthus species as a reservoir of resistance to the Orobanche cumana parasitic plant.

The parasitic plant Orobanche cumana is one of the major pests for sunflower crops in Europe. This study showed the strong potential of wild Helianthus species as a reservoir of resistance to this parasitic plant. The originality of the work lied in the phenotyping at various stages of the interaction using some of the most virulent broomrape races. Thus, we have shown that the resistances present in wild Helianthus affect at least 4 stages of the interaction: from very early to late stages.

The combination of these resistances will make possible in the future the construction of more durable pyramidal resistances in sunflower.
