Structural and functional investigation of receptors and signaling components governing plant-microbe interactions

Abstract : Microbial derived carbohydrates serve as signaling molecules, which in legumes are perceived by cell-surface receptors. Receptor-mediated perception of chitin and lipochitooligosaccharides initiates different signaling responses that enable the plant to distinguish beneficial from pathogenic microbes.
Using structural biology, biochemistry and functional experiments our research aims to understand how these receptors work at the molecular level. I will present our recent findings on how symbiotic signals are perceived to activate the downstream pathways and highlight some of the future challenges.
